“ Wherever two or three are gathered in My name”

It has been twenty-eight years since their friend Jeff was diagnosed.  He was a 41-year-old, strong well built ex-college football player and looked like he could overcome all obstacles.  His wife Martha shared responsibility for God’s gift of six children, ranging in age from 18 to 8 years.  All were honor student athletes. When his friend Bob heard of  Jeff’s illness, he pondered the question-----What could he do to save his friend from this giant killer called cancer?  He approached several of Jeff’s other friends individually and asked would they pray with him for Jeff’s recovery?  He said, “The prayer must be on a consistent basis, in a group, and at a time when the many demands of the world would not interfere.”

The men have been meeting now for twenty-eight years every Saturday at 7:00 am. They meet in each others' homes and pray any way that is comfortable for them.

The format of the hour long prayer session uses the guidelines below.

1.   The opening and closing are consistent:-  ie:  We start by inviting the Holy Spirit into our group, and we end with a plea to God’s Mother Mary to remember those for whom we pray.

2.   Focus is on God’s Will; with a pleading for compassion.

3.   Prayers of petition are the most prevalent (members tend to ask help for people with problems) but prayers  of  Thanksgiving, Praise and Adoration are also part of the format.

4.   The men are looking for inner peace.

5. The men are seeking God’s Grace, one day at a time.

6. After each person has presented their request for prayers, the Host for the day decides the format after that:-ie Structured, Bible, Spiritual writings, Religious articles, Liturgy of the Hours, Meditation music, Rosary or A combination.

7. The group meets to ‘PRAY’, not discuss.  It is not political or cause oriented.  --  Catholic action and causes are left for another time.

8. The humblest in our group has been persistent in his prayer for priests, religious, and vocations.  Although he died a few years ago, his petitions are never forgotten and are always mentioned by someone in the group.

9. Others have prayed for particular individuals or situations consistently since we began meeting; recognizing  however that God’s will be done, but none-the-less they continue to petition.

10. Our founder Bob and our friend Joe have also died as a result of cancer, but the Group still goes on.

We invite you to come pray with us on Saturday mornings. If after a few visits the process is not what you expected or was not meaningful for you then feel free to leave at any time.
